Reading, Writing and Math Program

AL101: One-to-One Reading and Writing Instruction for Non-Readers
Registration Fee: $50.00 for three months (2 hours each week).

This individualized reading and writing course is designed for non-readers. Reading and writing will focus on basic decoding, developing a sight vocabulary for spelling and reading, and introducing students to simple reading and sentence writing. Students will work on reading environmental and workplace signs and other literacy tasks which they identify as personally relevant. The course emphasizes learning skills appropriate to the community and workplace. Students will identify short and long-term goals for literacy learning. Learners may register for successive three month sessions until their goals are met.
Prerequisite: Skills assessment before the first tutoring session.

AL102: One to One Reading and Writing Instruction for Beginners
Registration Fee: $50.00 for three months (2 hours each week).

This individualized reading and writing course is designed for beginning readers and writers who want to continue developing basic decoding skills, increase sight word recognition and spelling, improve their comprehension of simple reading passages and begin writing groups of sentences. Students will identify short and long-term goals for literacy learning. Job related skills will be identified and integrated throughout the course if appropriate. Learners may register for successive three month sessions until their goals are met.
Prerequisite: Skills assessment before the first tutoring session.

AL103: One to One Advanced Reading and Writing Instruction
Registration Fee: $50.00 for three months (2 hours each week).

This individualized reading and writing course is designed for students who require greater ability with reading and writing in order to achieve a functional literacy level. The reading focus is on comprehension and developing a range of decoding strategies, and the writing focus is on composing sentences and paragraphs and developing a range of spelling strategies. Students will identify short and long-term personal goals for literacy learning. Job related skills will be identified and integrated throughout the course if appropriate. Reading content will include current events. Learners may register for successive three month sessions until their goals are met.
Prerequisite: Skills assessment before the first tutoring session.

AL104: One-to-One Instruction in Basic Math Skills
Registration Fee: $50.00 for three months (2 hours each week).

This individual program will focus on developing basic math skills of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers, place value, estimation, rounding of whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percents, and measurement as well as becoming comfortable using a calculator. Job related skills will be identified and integrated throughout the course if appropriate. Learners may register for successive three month sessions until their goals are met.
Prerequisite: Math assessment before the first class.
Requirement: Bring your calculator to class.

GED Preparation

AL105: One-to-One Instruction in GED Preparation
Registration Fee: $50.00 for three months (2 hours each week).

This individualized program centers on the needs and goals of learners working towards the GED; a trained volunteer will work with the learner focusing on reading, writing, and comprehension skills in the areas of GED Language Arts, Writing, Language Arts, Reading, Science, and Social Studies. Learners may register for successive three month cycles until their goals are met.
Prerequisite: Learner must be reading above a fifth grade level and complete a skills assessment before the first tutoring session.
Date: Open Enrollment: Each learner's three-month period begins at the first tutoring session.

AL106: GED Math Preparation: One-to-One Instruction
Registration Fee: $50.00 for three months (2 hours each week).

This individualized program centers on the needs and goals of learners improving their math skills; a trained volunteer will work with the learner focusing on the areas that need improvement. Pre-GED Mathematics content includes whole numbers, fractions, decimals, ratios, proportions, percents, charts, graphs, and word problems. Learners may register for successive six month cycles until their goals are met.

Upon successfully completing the Pre-GED Mathematics skills, the learner will continue improving his skills in GED Mathematics. GED Mathematics content includes Numbers and Operations, Measurement, Data Analysis, Algebra and Geometry.
Prerequisite: Math assessment before the first tutoring session.
Requirements: Purchase of a Pre-GED Mathematics workbook (approximate price $15-$20) and a Casio fx -260 solar scientific calculator(approximate price $9.00)

AL108: GED Official Half-Length Practice Test

Determine your general readiness for the Full Battery GED Test by taking the Half-Length GED Practice Test. Take the test for FREE and receive written test scores. Or, for a fee, take the Practice Test and the Director of Adult Literacy will meet individually with you to review the results. If the results indicate that you are not ready for the Full Battery GED Test, we offer individualized instruction in your area(s) of need.
Test Given: Reading, Writing, Math, Science and Social Studies
Date: Call 413 283 2329 to make an appointment
Cost: You have two options:

  • FREE (test scores only) OR
  • $30.00 to review the results with the Director (payment due at first test)


AL109: Placement Test Preparation for Community College (ACCUPLACER Test)
Registration Fee: $50.00 for three months (2 hours each week).

This individualized program helps learners review math, reading, comprehension, and writing to prepare for the Community College placement test. Learners will review the structure of the test so they will know what to expect.
Prerequisite: Assessment before the first tutoring session.
Requirement: Purchase of a workbook ($15.00 approximately)

AL110: Specialized Licensure Preparation

If you are required to take a specialized test, bring the material to us and we'll help prepare you to pass. Some examples: Coast Guard License, CDL (Commercial Driver's License), NCLEX-RN, NCLEX-PN (National Council Licensure Examination for Registered or Practical Nurses), ASVAB (Arms Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) and Driver's License. Also, we can help you prepare for the TOEFL test (Test of English as a Foreign Language), essential for college entry if you are not a native English speaker.
Date and time: To be arranged with tutor. You may meet several times a week if needed.
Cost: $10.00 per hour until goals are met

AL111: High School Student Tutoring
