Support through Volunteering
Volunteers are the heart and soul of Top Floor Learning. In FY 2007-08, volunteers donated 4,240 hours of time in various capacities. For example, there were 73 tutors, 10 board members, 7 administrative assistants, and 8 mailing helpers. Here are some of the duties of each category of volunteers (many do double duty, as tutors and board members, for example).
TUTORS: Top Floor Learning requires that all volunteer tutors take part in an18-hour training. The eligibility requirements are that you are a high school graduate and can speak, read and write English well. It helps to be curious, interested in others, and have a sense of humor. There is usually one English as a Second Language training each year, and one Reading/Writing training each year. More trainings are offered if the need arises (many tutors cross-train in both programs). The tutor trainings are professional, up-to-date with current educational theory, and a lot of fun at the same time. Many new friendships have been made during tutor training. BOARD MEMBERS: Top Floor Learning has a Board of Trustees that has ten members, on average, each year. New Trustees are nominated at the Annual Meeting which is held in September. Trustees represent a diversity of affiliations within the community. There is a minimum of ten meetings each year, and Trustees are required to attend a majority of the meetings. ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT: Office volunteers work an average of two hours per week and provide assistance with general office tasks such as photocopying, basic computer data entry, filing, maintaining the resource library, etc. Basic computer skills are much appreciated.
FUNDRAISING and EVENT MANAGEMENT: Each year, Top Floor Learning holds two or three major fundraising events. These include the May Basket Raffle (in its 14th year), Scrabble Tournaments (4th year), Christmas Tree Auction (2nd year). Experienced volunteers manage these events, and a good deal of help is always needed.
MAILING HELPERS: Several large bulk mailings take place throughout the year, and many hands are needed to stuff envelopes, fold course catalogues, attach labels, etc.
