English as a Second Language Tutor Training: 2006 Tuesdays 6-9 p.m.
Dates: Sept. 5, 12, 19 26; Oct. 3, 10
Tutor trainings are held twice a year, normally in the fall and the spring.
Volunteers are trained to teach either English as a Second Language or Reading and
Writing to adults, depending on which program has the greater need at the time.
Trainings consist of eighteen hours of instruction: six classes of three hours each,
held over six weeks. Volunteers learn about current teaching theory as well as useful
teaching techniques, strategies, and activities. The requirements are that volunteers
should have completed high school and have good speaking, reading and writing skills.
On completion of the training, volunteers will be either matched with a student for
one-to-one instruction, or will work in a team of tutors teaching a small class
(maximum class size is ten) for two hours each week, with appropriate lesson preparation
time added to this. Volunteers are asked to commit to a minimum of one year's teaching
with the program. If you are interested in finding out more, please call Top Floor Learning
